BMW 135i TWIN-TURBO LSD INSTALLATION

BMW 135i

This fast twin-turbo BMW 135i (400+ HP) is a perfect candidate for the OS Giken Limited-slip differential. With this kind of horsepower in a light car, getting the power to the ground requires an upgrade from the stock open diff.

OS Giken LSD

This car has special downpipes, a larger intercooler and has been reflashed. The result is far more power than the factory-supplied engine. At factory power levels the 135i can use an upgrade to a limited-slip differential; at the power level of this car, it NEEDS one!

OS Giken LSD

Some of these cars had the ring-gear welded to the carrier, making the LSD installation much more difficult; this car had the bolt-on ring-gear.

After removing the differential housing from the car, the bearings are removed from the housing and then the open-diff carrier and ring-gear are removed from the housing. The ring-gear is separated from the carrier.

OS Giken LSD

The ring-gear is attached to the OS Giken LSD using new bolts (do not reuse the old bolts) and the bearing races are pressed on. The limited-slip and ring-gear assembly is re-installed into the housing and the backlash is checked.

Backlash is adjusted with different thickness snap ring retainers.

The snap rings may be machined for fine backlash adjustments.

The differential housing is re-installed into the car (always use a new driveshaft nut) and the car is buttoned-up (don't forget the gear lube).
