Damage from pressure plate failure

The pressure plate face is indexed to the cover by riveted straps. These rivets can fail under racing conditions, allowing one or more of the straps to swing out under centifugal force. When this happens, the straps act like a buzzsaw and will grind through the bellhousing. A downshift over-rev can cause the rivets to fail, but may not be the only cause.

Several manufacturers make up-rated heavy duty pressure plates which may prevent this malfunction.
