SYNCHRONIZER SYSTEM

The system synchronizes the drive gears and shafts in manual gearboxes to ensure that equal rotational speed between the shaft and the gear is reached while shifting. The synchromesh system includes an idler gear with integral syncro cone and an eb-welded dog ring, a synchro ring (or 'blocker ring'), synchro hub (fixed to the mainshaft) and a shift sleeve.

As the shifter is moved, a fork moves the shift sleeve, which moves the synchro ring onto the syncro cone on the gear. The resulting friction between the synchro ring and the synchro cone causes the idler gear to match speed with the mainshaft. When the speed matches, the shift sleeve engages the dog ring on the gear and the gear is selected.
