OIL CONTAMINATION TECH TIP

gearbox magnet

Bearing debris on magnet (left), clean magnet (right)

The pinion bearing will shed debris as it wears. These tiny particles will contaminate the gear oil and circulate throughout the gearbox (the magnet in the bottom of transmission case won't catch everything). That circulation causes particles to collect and embed in the shift-rail bushings and gum them up (later model G96 gearboxes used linear bearings to prevent this). When this happens, the shift rails will bind when the transmission is cold and prevent the operating-sleeves from achieving full engagement. This will cause a 'cold transmission' popout. When the transmission warms up and the bushings expand, the rails won't bind and full engagement will prevent popout. ANY gear popout (whatever the cause) will cause damage to the dogring on the gear and the op-sleeve, thereby exacerbating the popout problem.

Installing the GBox detent will help prevent cold popout, but will not fix dogring/op-sleeve damage.
