LIMITED-SLIP DIFFERENTIAL REBUILD

Measuring internal baseplate height
A clutch-plate type LSD will require a rebuild at some point (which will be determined by usage); the plates in the differential are wear items. A rebuild requires more than just replacing the plates: all parts (even new parts) must be checked for correct tolerances and be machined if out of spec.

Measuring the stack height
The plates and ramp housings must be flat and true; if they are not, there will be unequal distribution of friction (like a clutch with a warped pressure plate). Many times these parts will need surfacing to meet specifications (in the following pages the number of passes needed to true parts will be apparent).
A series of measurements (specs) must be taken to determine tolerances for proper function after assembly.
